I remember reading an article where the author pointed out the difference between borrowing and stealing.  This was, I believe, in the context of a dicussion about good design practices, but it's something that I think applies just as well to .

The act of borrowing a Thing means that the Thing is still in essence someone elses.  Stealing a Thing, on the other hand, means that you make it your own, so the suggestion was to improve upon good designs/ideas/concepts out there in the wild enough so that you make it your own (and thus you've stolen it).

Interesting and sound advice.  Now if only I can remember who I borrowed this idea from ....
