Screencap from ‘Walking in Tokyo Shibuya at night‘, from the YouTube video channel Rambalac.

If you've ever wanted to explore the streets of Japan from the perspective of a pedestrian, YouTube vlogger Rambalac is for you. A non-Japanese resident of Japan, Rambalac has uploaded dozens of videos taken on walks throughout the Tokyo area as well as other parts of Japan.

“Not a vlog, no intrusive faces or talking, pure Japan only,” states Rambalac as in introduction to all of his videos. He simply walks the streets of Japan recording his videos with a Panasonic Lumix GH5 mirrorless camera mounted on a Zhiyun Crane V2 gimbal stabilzer. There is no background music and no commentary, although Rambalac will sometimes ask his subjects for permission to keep filming.

1/3 This new book on "Automating Inequality" puts for the thesis (according to the published excerpt) that 40 years ago computers did not help with decisions.
"The Rise of the Computer State" was published in 1980. All of the same, but without "AI", literally only "databases." pic.twitter.com/f8XIBeR66L

2/3 I suppose one could say it was right thought it took 40 years and was not the phone company and would happen in a completely different way that put forth.
The jacket copy and forward from "The Rise of the Computer State" are all too familiar.

3/3 How can this dialog get to discussing the humans and institutions and not keep transfering accountability to tools? Inequality, bias, bad/evil/awful choices, bad people, and poorly run institutions have existed before databases and before AI.

David Burnham's The Rise of the Computer State came out in 1983, a time when, for the most obvious of reasons, making comparisons between George Orwell's 1984 and real life was coming into vogue. ... And yet Orwell, with his vivid imagination, was unable to foresee the actual shape of the threat that would exist in 1984.

The Rise of the Computer State is a comprehensive examination of the ways that computers and massive databases are enabling the nation’s corporations and law enforcement agencies to steadily erode our privacy and manipulate and control the American people. This book was written in 1983 as a warning. Today it is a history. Most of its grim scenarios are now part of everyday life. The remedy proposed here, greater public oversight of industry and government, has not occurred, but a better one has not yet been found. While many individuals have willingly surrendered much of their privacy and all of us have lost some of it, the right to keep what remains is still worth protecting.

Angela Saini's “Superior” charts the rise of race science that's being enabled by technology and genetics research. Discover the worrying new trend in this extract

This is an edited extract from Angela Saini’s new book, Superior: The Return of Race Science, published on May 30 (4th Estate)

Angela Saini video interview: The return of race in mainstream science
By Lilian Anekwe, New Scientist, 22 May 2019
https://www.newscientist.com/article/2204322-angela-saini-video-interview-the-return-of-race-in-mainstream-science/

In her latest book, Superior: The Return of Race Science, Angela Saini examines what she calls the “subtle” return of race within mainstream science. She tells New Scientist that part of the reason she wrote the book was to understand our beliefs on race, and whether scientific beliefs have really moved on since the era of eugenics and the racialised scientific ideas that were popular before the second world war. Saini argues science, and society, has not moved on as much as we like to think. Racialised ideas about who we are still exist now, and we need to understand why.

Kathryn speaks with award-winning British journalist Angela Saini, whose latest book exposes and ... also an anti racism campaigner, Superior: The Return of Race Science looks at racial biases in science history. Angela Saini has been described as one of the world's best science writers, regularly presenting science programmes for the BBC. She writes for the Guardian, and the New Scientist. Holding a Masters in Engineering from Oxford University, where she was also an anti racism campaigner, “Superior: The Return of Race Science” looks at racial biases in science history. Exposing the lie at racism's rotten core: that inequality is a result of genetics rather than political power, that race is a biological characteristic instead of a social construct.

Superior by Angela Saini — are we all created equal?
Race science is undergoing a revival, after its horrific climax in the 20th century

A 19th-century British engraving depicting facial portraits from around the world — and European prejudice © Getty
The image of Neanderthals has been transformed over the past decade. These extinct hominins used to be regarded as stupid, brutish thugs. Now they are increasingly seen, at least in the western world, as intelligent and cultured people whom our aggressive human ancestors wiped out about 40,000 years ago.

The transforming event was the decoding 10 years ago of Neanderthal DNA extracted from fossilised bones, which showed that most living Europeans inherited about 2 per cent of their genome from Neanderthals through interbreeding, while Africans carry no Neanderthal genes. As Angela Saini writes in Superior, her brilliant analysis of race science past and present, the acceptance of Neanderthals as “people like us” is a recent example of a centuries-old European attitude — “casting humanity in our own image”.

Poema in versi di Ottavio Rinuccini:

Zefiro torna e di soavi accenti
    l'aer fa grato e'il pié discioglie a l'onde
e, mormoranda tra le verdi fronde,
fa danzar al bel suon su'l prato i fiori.

Inghirlandato il crin Fillide e Clori
    note temprando lor care e gioconde;

come vuol mia ventura, hor piango hor canto.

Letter from the Mountain (Takashi Koizumi 2002)
    Amida-do dayori (original title)
    2h 7min | Drama | 5 October 2002 (Japan)

As the film begins, Takao (Akira Terao) and Michiko (Kanako Higuchi) have already pulled up their Tokyo roots and moved to a village that is Takao's ancestral home. They visit a thatched cottage that serves as a memorial shrine (amidado) for the village dead and chat with the attendant, the spry 96-year-old Oume (Tanie Kitabayashi). Together they admire the view -- from an inspiring distance. Oume, it turns out, is a kind of sage, whose thoughts and observations are a popular feature in a column in a local newsletter. Her amanuensis is a mute, sweetly smiling young woman named Sayuri (Manami Konishi), who is as devoted to Oume as Oume is to the souls of her beloved dead.

Personal Portable Pedestrian: Lessons from Japanese Mobile Phone Use
Mizuko Ito, University of Southern California Keio University
    http://www.itofisher.com/mito/archives/ito.ppp.pdf
Paper presented at Mobile Communication and Social Change, the 2004 International Conference on Mobile Communication in Seoul, Korea, October 18-19, 2004

Personal, Portable, Pedestrian - Mobile Phones in Japanese Life
Edited by Mizuko Ito, Misa Matsuda and Daisuke Okabe
MIT Press, July 2005 (An open access file)
    https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/personal-portable-pedestrian
The Japanese term for mobile phone, keitai (roughly translated as "something you carry with you"), evokes not technical capability or freedom of movement but intimacy and portability, defining a personal accessory that allows constant social connection. Japan's enthusiastic engagement with mobile technology has become -- along with anime, manga, and sushi -- part of its trendsetting popular culture. Personal, Portable, Pedestrian, the first book-length English-language treatment of mobile communication use in Japan, covers the transformation of keitai from business tool to personal device for communication and play. The essays in this groundbreaking collection document the emergence, incorporation, and domestication of mobile communications in a wide range of social practices and institutions. The book first considers the social, cultural, and historical context of keitai development, including its beginnings in youth pager use in the early 1990s. It then discusses the virtually seamless integration of keitai use into everyday life, contrasting it to the more escapist character of Internet use on the PC. Other essays suggest that the use of mobile communication reinforces ties between close friends and family, producing "tele-cocooning" by tight-knit social groups. The book also discusses mobile phone manners and examines keitai use by copier technicians, multitasking housewives, and school children. Personal, Portable, Pedestrian describes a mobile universe in which networked relations are a pervasive and persistent fixture of everyday life.

Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out - Kids Living and Learning with New Media The MIT Press
    https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/hanging-out-messing-around-and-geeking-out
Conventional wisdom about young people’s use of digital technology often equates generational identity with technology identity: today’s teens seem constantly plugged in to video games, social networking sites, and text messaging. Yet there is little actual research that investigates the intricate dynamics of youths’ social and recreational use of digital media. Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out fills this gap, reporting on an ambitious three-year ethnographic investigation into how young people are living and learning with new media in varied settings—at home, in after-school programs, and in online spaces.
Integrating twenty-three case studies—which include Harry Potter podcasting, video-game playing, music sharing, and online romantic breakups—in a unique collaborative authorship style, Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out is distinctive for its combination of in-depth description of specific group dynamics with conceptual analysis.

Participatory Culture in a Networked Era: A Conversation on Youth, Learning, Commerce, and Politics

    http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0745660703.html
In the last two decades, both the conception and the practice of participatory culture have been transformed by the new affordances enabled by digital, networked, and mobile technologies. This exciting new book explores that transformation by bringing together three leading figures in conversation. Jenkins, Ito and boyd examine the ways in which our personal and professional lives are shaped by experiences interacting with and around emerging media.
Stressing the social and cultural contexts of participation, the authors describe the process of diversification and mainstreaming that has transformed participatory culture. They advocate a move beyond individualized personal expression and argue for an ethos of “doing it together” in addition to “doing it yourself.”
Participatory Culture in a Networked Era will interest students and scholars of digital media and their impact on society and will engage readers in a broader dialogue and conversation about their own participatory practices in this digital age.

    Cosmography of the Local Universe

A dynamic mapping of the "local universe" - out to 300 million light years

    Cosmography of the Local Universe

Behold a 3D map of of the universe, showing all galaxies out to 300 million light years

A film by Hélène Courtois, Daniel Pomarède, R. Brent Tully, Yehuda Hoffman, and Denis Courtois. All rights reserved.
Brent Tully, a cosmologist at the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy has mapped the universe in detail out to a distance of about 100 million light years. To put that in more human terms: Columbus's maps of the New World described a land 3,000 miles from home, but Tully's map extends 6,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles out. No wonder he is often referred to as a cosmic cartographer. By filling in the details, Tully has made it possible to discern the true structure of the universe: clusters of galaxies arranged into enormous filaments, bound together by invisible strands of dark matter, and tremendous lonely voids where galaxies are sparse.
